In my dream, I was standing on the top of a middle-eastern house, overlooking the plains of Armageddon. I have visited Israel and been to Armageddon in real life. In the dream, I looked (craning my neck to see) and I saw in the far distance, a fountain. As I looked, I was surprised to see that the fountain was inside another larger fountain. As I looked, I saw yet another fountain enveloping the second fountain. They were inside one another like those babushka dolls fit inside one another. Suddenly, I realised that these fountains were covering everything. All the fountains formed one fountain and everything that I could see, I saw through the fountains. The fountains washed everything.
This reminds me of, “For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.‘” Acts 17:28
The Painting. I had a sense of urgency that I wanted to depict this dream. At first the illustration of it was relatively easy, but as a work of art it wouldn’t have gained any credibility at my art school. The process of painting was slowed down as I left the painting out to dry; then viewed it; then became disappointed, then let it gather dust as a failure. It remained like that for a year. At last, annoyance and impatience overtook me and I did what we had been taught to do in these situations. I took a large brush and a rag and covered the lot with blue paint. I took delight in seeing the rivulets of watery blue run down the canvas, replicating the very thing that I was trying to illustrate. This was the breakthrough for which I was looking.
This had been a tiring process so I put the painting aside for the night, tilted slightly so that the tinted water could continue its course. I had included ‘interference medium’, a slightly pearlised look that shone. I’m afraid it doesn’t photograph well.
In the morning, I noticed something odd. The paint had gather along lines and marks made by the palette knife during the underpainting. It took the form of a city! I have included a detail picture of this in black and white so that the form is easier to see.
I looked and I saw … a fountain
The detail of the ‘sky’ area:
I have adjusted the tones in this electronically and sharpened the image.
My next task will be to draw on this in order to bring out the detail that I can see in my imagination.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who sees buildings and objects in this sepia picture.
Interpretations. Art imagery can be multilayered and carry several meanings. For that reason I shall not settle on one interpretation immediately. The picture causes me as the viewer to recall scripture:
Zechariah 13King James Version (KJV)
1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.
2 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.
3 And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the Lord: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.
4 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:
5 But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.
6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.
7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.
8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.
9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.
Comment: Coincidentally, this was a scripture that had been playing on my mind a couple of weeks ago (January 2016) starting at verse 7. I was surprised that my search of the word ‘fountain’ would raise it a second time.
Another scripture that contains the word ‘fountain’:
Psalm 36:9-11New International Version (NIV)
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
10 Continue your love to those who know you,
your righteousness to the upright in heart.
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.
